Located in theNear West Side, the park is just south ofAshland Lake stationon theGreenandPinklines of theChicago \'L\', bordered by North Ashland Avenue on the west,West Lake Streeton the north, the diagonalNorth Ogden Avenuealong most of the east border, and West Washington Boulevard on the south. The park has several large green fields used for demonstrations or various forms offootball, playgrounds, a swimming pool, a fieldhouse, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts

While the name was chosen in 1853 in reference to the United States\'federal union, Union Park has a considerable labor history. The surrounding neighborhood is the home of most of the city\'slabor unionoffices, including theUnited Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, theTeamsters,LIUNA, theWorkers UnitedHall, and over a dozen others.

In the 1910s, the park was one of the only racially integrated parks in the city.In 2006, the park was the starting point for Chicago\'s wing of the2006 immigration reform protests, including theGreat American BoycottonInternational Workers Day, which were the largest demonstrations in the history of Chicago to date. It is also the site of the annualPitchfork Music Festivaland many other music festivals andpolitical protests. In 2006, the city commissioned a statue ofJames Connolly, anIrishrepublicanandMarxistwho was executed in 1916, on the south west corner.

Union Park Congregational Church and Carpenter Chapel(also known asFirst Baptist Congregational Church) is a historic church building at 60 N. Ashland Blvd. on the Near West Side ofChicago, Illinois. The chapel is named afterPhilo Carpenter, a deacon, a co-founder of the congregation and of theChicago Theological Seminary, and an early donor of the original church who was also a notedabolitionistand the city\'s first druggist. The two buildings are considered as a unit; together, they are aChicago Landmarkand an Illinois Historic Landmark and are listed on theNational Register of Historic Places. The church building is currently occupied by the First Baptist Congregational Church, whose official mailing address is 1613 W. Washington Blvd. in Chicago.

TheGothic Revivalchapel was designed by architect Otis Wheelock, partner ofW. W. Boyingtonin the firm of Boyington & Wheelock, for the Chicago Theological Seminary, which was located on the same campus; the chapel was completed the same year that construction began on the church.
