Description
Austro-Hungarian Continental Silver Etrog Box With Unusual Lemon Finial, circa 1850-58
This beautiful piece of silver Judaica was made in the town of Pressberg in the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1850-58. The rectangular box has the rounded curves and flowing lines associated with Rococo-influenced design. The box rests on four raised, curved, chased feet. The hinged lid is crowned by a beautifully formed ovoid lemon, split open to show the interior of the fruit, still on the stem. The front of the box is monogrammed "M W" in a fine script.
This box would be used to hold an oval shaped citrus fruit during Sukkot, the Jewish holiday commemorating the forty years the Jewish people spent wandering in the desert. A piece of citrus is one of the items kept in the sukkah, a temporary house built during the holiday.
This beautiful and unusual piece of continental silver would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Judaica or silver boxes.
Marked: Stamped on the back of the box with the lettere "Si" and the impressed mark for the city of Pressberg with the numbers 1,8 and 5 for the 1850s. One number is worn so it was not possible to determine the exact year of manufacture. "13" in the middle of the mark indicates a silver grade of .812 1/2. The box weighs 348 grams.
Measures: 5 " H to the top of the finial x 6 "across at the widest point of the base.
Excellent condition: A few small dents on the back top of the lid in the corners and above one legon the bottom l/h corner. (pictured)
