Artist’s Biography:

Amirhossein Aminorroaya was born on May 24, 1966 in Isfahan.

During his school years, he started to work at the Metal Engraving workshops in Naghshe Jahan Square in Isfahan in order to learn the art of metal engraving. He has been working as an artist in this field for 35 years.He is one the pioneers and well-known characters of his art of metal and silver engraving in Isfahan.

His workshop is now located in Naghshe Jahan (Image of the World) Historical Square. All his works has his special signature \"AMIN\" and this signature could be seen in all his products.

What is Qalam Zani and How is this masterpiece made?

Ghalamzani (Metal Engraving) has a long and outstanding background in Iranian history. In the archeological discoveries, there are many findings of metal work of this kind even before the recorded history of Iran. The pinnacle of this art has been during the Sassanide (700 AD) before Islam and again in 16th century during the Safavid dynasty. Too much work has been done during the last years for the resumption of this art. These attempts not only have created lots of artistic metal engravings but have trained a new generation of artists which try hard to keep this art live and magnificent.

Ghalamzani (Metal Engraving) is done by using different methods. Every of these methods have their own beauty and impressive design. The basic works done on the metal to be engraved is almost the same in all the methods. First the selected metal (copper or brass) is shaped by hammer or special devices. The formed metal must be covered with tar which is thickened and hardened with soft chalk or ash in order to absorb the shocks of the hammer blows. In this stage, if the desired final product is flat, its back is tarred and if it is vase-shaped, its internal space is completely filled with tar. After that, the selected design is drawn on the metal surface. These designs include geometrical shapes or miniatures related to Iranian mythical stories. Finally the engraving is done with different sorts of special tools and hammers.

The precision of the hammer blows and the artist hand’s movements creates an artistic work shaped in different forms: beautiful vases, boxes, dishes, samovars etc.
