MAJOLICA PITCHER DAVID HAYNES & CO. AVALON FAIENCE BALT Rare Antique 1882-1890:
$12.42

This is a VERY RARE MAJOLICA PITCHER produced by DAVID HAYNES & CO. inBaltimore, MA between 1882-1890. This pitcher was produced within the eightyears company was producing. This handsome example of 19th CenturyAmerican Avalon Faience Majolica is this compelling pitcher; Haynes bought the oldChesapeake Pottery in 1882, and Avalon Faience was an inspired result.

The design is called \"AVALON\" and has flowers vines andleaves. This RARE piece is a small pitcher that has a handle and singlegold line on edge of opening. It also has a bow around the neck that is outlined with a gold line. The veins in the leaves also have gold lines. The handle of the pitcher is darker at the top than the bottom of it. The two cracks noted above and in the picture on the base of the pitcher seem to be the result from the firing of this piece and not from a drop or a chip (it\'s like it shrunk). Also, there\'s a small chip in the spout noted as well as the bottom of the handle. Please check all pictures before offerding as this piece is NO RETURNS. Measures approx:4 3/4\" x 4 1/2\" (including handles.) Marking on bottom: Avalon,Balt, Faience and the initials DFH in the middle. This is a great findfor someone\'s collection. It is over 125 years!

DAVID HAYNES & CO. Armed with an understanding of English pottery fromtrips abroad as a youth, David Haynes founded D.F. Haynes & Co. in 1879 inBaltimore MA, and in 1881 purchased Chesapeake Pottery. Since trainedmodelers with original artistic skills were difficult to find, Haynes began todesign wares for the pottery himself. The AVALON pieces were crafted byapplying color over the layer of glaze before firing. As a result, manyof the Avalon pieces are often found with chipped paint. Haynes producedtheAvalon wares for close to five years only. This item is NO RETURN

This is a VERY RARE piece that has survived for over a century! It istruly a rare find and, for many collectors, will be the first to see a vase asthis.
