RARE & IMPORTANT MASSIVECHINESE SWATOW BASIN
Chinese Zhangzhou (Swatow) basin of exceedingly rare size (see photo1 for comparison with dollar). Measuring a full 16\" across, this piece makes a statement from all the way across the room.Exuberant overglaze enamels depicting a five clawed dragon amongst swirling cloudsto the interior, banded round with vibrant iron red and green patterning at the rim. The exterior is further adorned with bold lappets and freeform decoration typical of thesewares. Heavy and hand thrown with dripping underglaze applied quite thickly in some areas. Bears an incised mark on the underside within the recessed foot.In excellent antique condition with all the fabulous crazing, dripsand glaze flaws typical of Swatow ware.Animportant example of the bold craftsmanship of Chinese export ceramics. Never have we seen a piece in this condition of such a monumental scale.Anexquisite displaybowl for the collector ofworld class Chinese antiques.
