Item 483850 ◊ Mid-1900\'s Two (2) Tin Pin Back Buttons for Robert Taft and Michael DiSalle, Ohio Politicians

Rare and historical \"Mid-1900\'s Two (2) Pin Back Buttons for Robert Taft and Michael DiSalle, Ohio Politicians.\"  Like many buttons of the time, they are made from tin with an iron pin.  And both measure 15/16 inches in diameter.

These two Ohio politicians came from the same era, but were certainly on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Button #1: for Robert A. Taft (sometimes called \"Bob\") Is red, white and blue, with \"Bob Taft for Senate\" written on the front.

This button is in very good to excellent condition.   There are two small surface scrapes, one at the top and one at the bottom.   The back is pristine with no oxidation.  (Please see the photos to confirm the condition of this button.)

Robert A Taft (son of President Taft,) who was an influential Republican politician from 1921 until his death in 1953. He ran for the Senate numerous times, and served as a Congressman from January 3, 1939 until his death on July 31, 1953.  So this pin could have come from any or all of his campaigns.

He positioned himself several times to run for President, but never succeeded to receive the nomination.  Despite the fact that early in his career he opposed the Ku Klux Klan, which wanted to instill Christianity in the public schools, as well as opposing Prohibition, he was still a conservative politician and opposed the \"New Deal,\" getting involved in WWII, and NATO, conversely favoring  limited government spending, a balanced federal budget, low taxes, pro-business policies.  The electorate however favored a more moderate stance, selecting Dewey, Willkie, and Eisenhower as their candidates.

Button #2: for Michael DiSalle is a simple white with navy blue lettering.  It depicts the outline of the state of Ohio, and states \"Mike in 1956\" in the center of it.

This button is in very good to excellent condition, with two small surface scrapes, one at the top and one just under the \"1956.\"  The back of this button is also in pristine condition with no oxidation.  (Please see the photos to confirm the condition of this button.)

Michael DiSalle as born in New York City, to Italian American immigrant parents, however they moved to Toledo, Ohio, when he was three years old.

He was was elected to a series of positions in Toledo, including Mayor from 1948 to 1950. He also ran for the State and National House of Representatives, as well as for the United States Senate in 1950.  President Harry S. Truman named DiSalle director of the Office of Price Stabilization, during the Korean War.    But after that he ran for the US Senate unsuccessfully again.

FINALLY in 1958 DiSalle won the Governorship of Ohio, serving from 1959 to 1963. He only served one term, because voters disapproved of his support for an end to capital punishment, and a tax hike.

As a  death penalty opponent, DiSalle commuted a number of sentences during his Governorship.  DiSalle\'s primary concerns regarding the death penalty was that poorer defendants did not have the same access to counsel as rich defendants, and therefore would suffer the death penalty disproportionately. In 1965 he wrote a book called, The Power of Life or Death, and discussed his difficult experiences as the man charged with making the final decision regarding a sentence commutation.  And he explained what It means to stay an execution, describing the Godlike power to stop the clock and the agony of having to decide an appeal for executive clemency.

Unique and to-the-point, these \"Mid-1900\'s Two (2) Tin Pin Back Buttons for Robert Taft and Michael DiSalle, Ohio Politicians,\" would be a wonderful addition to any political button collection!!!
