In the post war era, Europe took the lead in modern lighting.
This may have been due to the fact that after so much destruction, there
was a need to rebuild Europe and more demand for furnishings and lighting.
This spirit of renewal and change was embraced in Europe and
in Italy one could see the designers breaking with the old ways and creating
new forms and shapes that defined a new era!This biomorphic sconce/chandelier is a tour de force of European
modernism! The light and bright hues are complemented by a visual
airiness - the sense of looking at a cloud hovering in the sky!
This lamp is reminiscent of designs by Max Ingrand and Fontana Arte
who worked with amoeba-like shapes in chandeliers,
and along with other manufacturers, brought to life the biomorphic school
of lighting design. This design ethos was short-lived, started around 1946
and peaked around 1952. This has made the biomorphic furnishings crafted
during this era particularly scarce and extremely coveted. This sconce/chandelier has an ethereal beauty that transcends
all time periods. It looks simply sublime lit or unlit!
