This extraordinary book is the scarce, 149-year old, collectible-quality, Military Dictionary by Colonel H.L. Scott, Inspector General of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War.

Published in 1864 and used extensively during the Civil War, this illustrated dictionary addresses an extensive and comprehensive listing of subjects related to the military and the conduct of war. It is loaded with definitions relating to the conduct of war. It presents the definitions in use at the start of the Civil War and used extensively throughout the war.

Colonel Scott \"saw a gap in the literature of the military, and sought to fill it with this dictionary of truly varied information relating to all aspects of the military. It includes information related to all aspects of the military including combat information, legal issues, government, regulations, administration and practical advice including a recipe for shoe-black and recommendations on how to select a good horse. The design of the work is to present a comprehensive, military dictionary. From Abandoning a Post to Zig-Zag the book is absolutely loaded with military topics, too many to describe. Artillery, Articles of War, attacks, booty, courts-martial, arms, defense, evidence, fords, field works, fortification, ordinance, reconnaissance, roads, sieges, volunteers, war, paces, rack-sack, rampart, rifles, sentry, squares, trestle, windage, and hundreds more are all included. It also gives practical examples.

Henry Lee Scott (1814-1886) was a colonel and Inspector-General of the U.S. Army and son-in-law of General Winfield Scott (Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Army at the onset of the Civil War).

THIS BOOK SET IS IN NEAR FINE - CONDITION

This wonderful, antiquarian book is is bound in navy blue, oil cloth covers with gold lettering on the spine and marbled page ends. The book is the original text that is professionally rebound with new end pages. The exterior is clean and has no bumping, rubbing or edge wear. The book is clean and solidly bound throughout. The interior and pages are in nice condition overall. The pages are clean and free of any writing or foxing, but there is some light smudging on the title page and two other pages and the tops of some pages have light water staining not affecting the text. The remainder of the book is fine. It contains numerous illustrations and charts containing data. The binding is solid throughout the book. It has no looseness or lean and both hinges are in solid condition. The book has a private pasteboard on the front, inside cover. There are no other stamps or markings in it and it is not an ex-library book. It has handsome, marbled page ends. 674 pages plus advertisements by the publisher. This is an exceptionally scarce, First Edition book – an important, historically-significant book that influenced the Civil War
