This sale is for the one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn, original comic artwork by Milton Caniff for his Terry & the Pirates daily of 1/9/42. It features main characters Terry and Pat Ryan in two panels and showcases Caniff\'s beautifully rendered shading to the clothing and detailed backgrounds. The entire art board measures 22 7/8\" w x 6 1/2\" h and the image area inside the borders is 19 3/4\" x 5 3/8\". The medium is pen and ink on three-ply art board. For being 73 years old, the artwork is in excellent condition. The art board is a nice cream color and the syndicate\'s copyright sticker is still firmly attached. The ink is still a rich and deep black. There are some minor flaws which are typical of Terry & the Pirates from this period and do not detract significantly from the eye-appeal of the artwork. There is a rough cut to some of the edges of the art board and rounding of the corners, all well away from the image area. Light staining in couple spots in the margins. The image area within the borders is in excellent condition. Judge the condition for yourself--the pictures above are high resolution scans of the artwork (due to the size of the art being too big for my scanner, the images of the artwork are divided in two scans so the entire piece could be viewed--the actual artwork is all in one piece). there are no creases between panels. The Terry & the Pirates produced by Milton Caniff was one of the most popular, influential and best comic strips of all time(source Wikipedia). Examples from the time of this strip, at the height of its popularity, are sought after by collectors. I am a serious comic art collector who is \"thinning the herd,\" as my collection has grown too large.
