The 24 pound Howitzerfield piece and the limber cart were indispensable piecesof equipment during the Civil War. Howitzerswere short-barreled guns that were optimized for firing explosive shells in ahigh trajectory. Howitzers wereconsidered the weapon of choice if the opposing forces were concealed behindterrain features or fortifications. Thelimber was a simple two-wheeled cart composed of an axle, with its wheels, mountedby a framework designed for holding an ammunition chest that contained roundsfor the artillery piece. Thetongue (trail) of an artillery piece was attached to the rear of the limber. A team of horses was hitched to the limber whenthe army was on the move. The term“Pounders” simply refers to the weight of the projectile that the gunfired. The brass 24 pound Howitzer fieldpiece is 5” overall, with the brass barrel being 3” in length. The width is 3-1/8”. The barrel is mounted on a cast iron wheeled “truck”. The limber is 5-3/4” in length, with a widthof 3-1/4”. The cast iron portions ofthese vintage miniatures show flaking paint and could use some cleaning. Please check out the rest of our store.
