Listing Item: Hunting case Vacheron & Constantin Pocket Watch
Style: Luxury
Date of Manufacture: circa 1887-1900 (serial number dates it to 1900, inscription dates it to 1888, may have been made 1887).
Gender: Mens
Case: 18K solid pink gold, was cased in USA by JE Caldwell & Co. (jeweler that special ordered the movements from Vacheron)
Movement: Original Vacheron signed movement, 17 jewels, Swiss made, hand winding
Crystal: Original glass
Dial: Original enamel dial with fancy arrangement of the Arabic numerals, signed also with the jewelers name which matches the case and the box as well
Hands: Original blued steel with sub seconds
Crown: Original, gold filled
Size: 49 mm in diameter
Grade/Condition: The watch is in excellent condition overall. I\'m really picky with how I describe watches but really for an 1888 watch it is nearly perfect. The cases opens and closes properly, very nice and firm. The movement was running perfect when I bought the watch but we went ahead and serviced it, and just runs flawlessly. The time sets perfect as it should.
Written Warranty: One year warranty certificate included, warranty work comes directly through our shop
Remarks: This is an investment piece, and it is all original. JE Caldwell & Co. was a \"snooty\" jeweler (according to an older gentleman that actually knew the jeweler from which I bought the watch from) who ordered movements from fine watch companies like Vacheron and cased them and sold them under their name. Condition is just superb because watch was well preserved.
Box/Papers/Extras: Original jewelers box is included

This information is a general comment and does not necessarily pertain to this particular item:

If you\'ve never owned a vintage watch and do not know how one operates please ask first. If you do not ask I will assume you know. Please keep in mind vintage mechanical watches cannot keep time as quartz battery operated watches, and they do not run on batteries, they have a mainspring as their source of power. Mechanical watches will vary in accuracy due to temperature changes, positions of the watch, or how much power reserve is in the mainspring.

Modern mechanical watches, like vintage watches, always have a variance in accuracy as well. When we service a watch and offer it with a warranty it means we did everything possible to bring it to as close to original factory accuracy as possible. Below are some examples of watches and some of their time keeping variance:

Chronometer watches (such as Rolex, Omega Constellation, etc) will vary within 8 seconds per day fast-slow. Any watch that says unadjusted on the movement means that the time keeping variance will be much more than chronometer watches because it was not factory adjusted to keep the same time under different circumstances. This is true for most most common 17 jewel watches and pocket watches. These will usually vary from -20 seconds per day to +30 seconds per day. Examples are vintage and modern Seikos, most vintage watches, and most Swiss or American made watches of average grade. And this variance is considered perfect. Many good quality watches and most watches leaving the factory today run anywhere between -11 to +11 seconds per day (example ETA movements on most Omegas, Tags, Breitlings, etc). Old vintage character watches ran usually within 1-2 minutes per day (new, so don\'t expect much better now). Railroad grade pocket watches ran usually within a few seconds plus or minus per month. Very early time keeping watches such as cylinder watches (which were mostly made for the looks and beauty of the cases) ran within 5-15 minutes off per day (and needed to be wound twice daily). This is just a general rule and many times because a vintage watch was used so much, or not serviced regularly, or just was improperly repaired by hobbyist or other watchmakers sometime accuracy cant be as good as new. And of course there are exceptions to the rule, so if you own a vintage watch and it runs at 0 seconds variance per day, well that is just fantastic. Some will run perfect, and many do. Our goal for quality watches is to make them run within 10 seconds per day whenever possible.

Please also know that a vintage watch should be kept away from strong magnetic fields such as microwaves, computers, copiers, etc.

A vintage watch should not be dropped, it has precise mechanical components which can become damaged.

A vintage watch should not be put under water, period! Even watches that were sold as \"waterproof\" watches when new didn\'t mean that you can swim with them. It always meant that if you accidentally submerged your watch in water, but took it out within a given amount of time (usually no more than 1-3 minutes), that water would not get inside. Even on modern watches that have rating such as 50m, 100m, and so on, that doesn\'t really mean you can go swimming with it. Very few watches were actually designed to swim with. Most watches being signed \"waterproof\" was only as a precautionary thing, and most modern watches which say \"water resist\" only means that if drops of water splash on your watch (such as from rain, washing hands, etc), water will not enter (provided you wipe the water off as soon as possible).

Do not open a vintage watch, if you\'re not a qualified watchmaker.

Avoid extreme temperature changes.

Keep away from humidity, sand and extremely dusty areas.

Folks, if you follow these rules you\'ll take good care of your vintage or modern watch and it will last you decades.
