Description An extremely fine silk and linen sampler by eleven year old Margaret Cole, circa 1820 - 1840, possibly earlier. The sampler is in excellent overall condition retaining wonderful color and contrast and filled with delightful motifs - my favorite being the facing sheep at the bottom center (see below for more info on the sheep!). The sampler is bordered on all four sides with a vining honey-suckle border.The quality of the stitching is extremely high and the composition very attractive. The sampler measures about 21 1/2\" x 17\" framed with a sight size of about 17 1/2\" x 13\". Displayed in an antique (but not original) hardwood frame with gilt subframe and ready to displayMargaret\'s sampler features two short verses on mortality at the top, one for children and the second for a young maid, with facing birds on a branch and potted flowers to either side; underscored by a diamond pattern panel. The verses read:

\"Blest babes for you your parents weep
But could they tell how sweet\'s thy sleep
They would not grieve but wish to be
In peace and rest in heaven with ye.By wasting palms her beauteous form decay\'d
And death at length gave up to heaven a maid
Whose duteous conduct gained her many a friend
Who lov\'d her living and lament her end.\"The remaining two-thirds of the sampler is filled with beautiful symmetrically placed motifs and Margaret\'s identifying information within a rectangular cartouche:\"Margaret Cole / Aged 11 Years\".The pictorials included a trumpeting cherub above Margaret\'s \"signature\" and a large sprig of rose buds below. There are two pairs of facing birds; several large floral arrangements and several smaller ones.Bottom center, flanking a floral compote, are a pair of sheep on lawns with the most distinctive large ears. I believe these are charming representations of Cheviot sheep, a native British breed originating in the Cheviot Hills as early as 1372. The Cheviot Hills are located across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.
