Sgt. Fury was a hard-fighting hero of World War II, eventually rising to the rank of colonel. Years later, Nick Fury was recruited by Tony Stark (in Strange Tales #135) to fight a different kind of war. As director of S.H.I.E.L.D. —the Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law-enforcement Division—Nick Fury now became a sort of James Bond-like super-spy, complete with a bevy of technological gadgets and gizmos.

In his new organization, Fury recruited several of his old war buddies, including Dum-Dum Dugan and Gabe Jones. Together with the dedicated agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., they fight a cloak-and-dagger battle against the threats to world peace.
