Greetings. You are offerding on the original art for the daily comic strip MARY WORTHwritten by Allen Saunders and drawn byKEN ERNST.

Publication Information and Description: This particular daily comic strip was published onTuesday, December 26, 1972.The stripfeatures fourpanels. The artwork area is approximately 20\"by 7”. The strip is signed“Ken Ernst & Allen Saunders” and isdated “12-26”.The strip was distributed byField Enterprisesas per thecopyright indicia.

This is NOT a copy or stat or proof. This is the original art, drawn (pen andink) by Ken Ernst. Nicelayout and strong inksbya true master of the form. Saunders\'feel for melodramawas perfectly married to a Ernst\'s deft proficiency with pen and ink.An excellent example of the long-runningstrip.

This strip features a late night phone call from Mrs. Stover, who looks a bit of a mess and has apparently been sipping some bourbon to get her courage screwed up. Such threatening-sounding phone calls, especially in the middle of the night, are rarely good news. And who really likes being wakened from a sound sleep. You get the distinct impression that once he takes this call, he\'s not getting too much more sleep. A touch of cheesecake with the nice shot of the young lady in her nightgown.

Character and Artist Information:

Mary Worthis an American comic strip which firstappearedin 1938 and continues to run today.Mary Worthis one of the longest-running continuity strips or \"comic-page soap operas\" (a genre dedicated to the millions of readers who thrive on continued stories told in brief daily episodes with cliffhanger endings). Many contend thatMary Worth wasa continuation of the Depression Era comic strip favorite,Apple Mary. It\'s origins are somewhat obscure (for a variety of reasons),but it appears that Mary Worthwas created as a replacement feature offered to newspapers when Martha Orr, (who created the original dowdy apple peddler Mary)retired. Some assert that the onlything that Mary Worthhad in common with her predecessor was theirfirst name. If you look at the early strips, however, the characters (Apple Mary and Mary Worth) looked nearly identical. Mary Worthappeared then much as she is today,a well-spoken gentlewoman with a knack for quoting proverbs and surrounding herself with interesting people whose lives reflect the daily concerns of society. Over the years, Mary\'s storieshave confronted social issues, such as juvenile delinquency, unwed motherhood, drug addiction, spouse abuse, alcoholism, infidelity, concerns of the elderly and the generation gap. TheMary Worth stories are not about Mary. They focus onthecontinually changingparade of people who enter (and leave) Mary\'s life.

Ken Ernst(1918-1985) wasan American comic book artist and illustrator. He is best known for his workin comicsand his long stint on the MaryWorth comic strip, which hedrew from 1942-1985. Mr. Ernst drew for DC and Harvey Comics and assisted on the strip, Don Winslow of the Navy, before tackling Mary Worth. He and Saunders brought a new realism and modern feel to the strip, which quickly became more successful. Ernst rendered the strip in a realistic style \"inspired by that of his mentors Milt Caniff and Noel Sickles.\" His depiction of Mary Worthbecame a prototype for the \"gentle and sophisticated\" soap opera strip.Eminent comic strip historian Coulton Waugh notedErnst\'s \"smooth, smart, dressy, modern style.\" Waugh also admired Ernst\'s device of drawing a group of characters in a panel without any background and, throughuse of shadow effects, madethe figures appear to leap out of the panel.

Condition: The art is in overall excellent condition. No stats or paste-overs or white-out corrections.Minor spots and smudges.Full margins all around.

Don’t let this one pass you by! A ‘must” for “Mary Worth” or Ken Ernstfans, comic book or strip or illustration art collectors, or anyone who appreciatesa piece ofAmericana ora well renderedpiece of art.
