This is a truly impressive ceramic Cuchimilco figurine likely from the Ica-Chincha culture (AD 1000-1476) of central coastal Peru, south of Lima. These are very rare (I\'ve only seen two others in books & museums) and this is perhaps the best example I\'ve seen of this culture and truly qualifies as \"museum piece\" for its rarity and quality. The meaning of these humanoidcharacters isn’t fully known, but they have always been found as burialofferings in tombs or even within the wrappings of mummies, possiblyserving the same purpose as Ushabtis in ancient Egypt as helpers of the dead inthe afterlife.

Unlike the more coarse and \"primitive\" Cuchimilco from the contemporaneous Chancay culture to the north, this quite large Cuchimilco - representing a female - shows the bright colors and higher quality craftsmanship seen in the Ica-Chincha ceramics. These colors were likely adopted from the Wari and Nazca cultures previous to them. This figure measures 14.75\" high and 10\" wide at the arms. There are several small holes in the body that were incised into the wet clay to prevent the hollow inside chamber from exploding during the firing process, but no restoration or damage. The colors are fantastic and the pigments rich and showing very little loss overall. There are areas showing root marks, attesting to a long-term burial.Please carefully examine the photos of this spectacular piece.

These artifacts are from my father’s collection, which heamassed from the 1950’s to the early 1990’s, and were all obtained legally atthe time from antiquities dealers within the US.
