Massive c. 1809 N. Preston London Fusee Pocket Watch, Sterling Silver Pair Case:
$299.00

This is an impressive and substantial pair-cased fusee by N. Preston of London. This watch is massive and heavy, measuring 59mm in its pair case, 27.5mm thick, and weighing about 5.8 ounces.

The movement is a chain-driven fusee signed “N. Preston, London.” Check out the beautiful chasing and piercing! The movement winds well and runs, but is sluggish, and will run for a while and then stop. The watch probably has not been cleaned and lubricated for a very, very long time.

The cases are well-fitted and nicely made. They are signed “I.M.” and have Birmingham hallmarks, and a 1809 date mark. Inside the outer case one finds 5 service papers and a leather pad to ensure a snug fit. The papers trace the watch from England, and it seems to have “immigrated” to the North Carolina in the 1830s. The owner’s name is written on the back of one of the slips, but I can’t quite make it out.

The heavy bullseye crystal is in grate shape. The dial was damaged at one point and repaired along the edge
