One of the most visited Mayan archaeological sites of South America, the Kukulkan Pyramid, also known as "El Castillo" (The Castle), was constructed by the pre-Columbian Maya around the 9th century AD over the foundations of an earlier one.The temple is dedicated to Kukulkan, the ancient Dragon-Serpent of Mayan astronomical myth.

MYTHIC BACKGROUND

The overall structure has nine levels, parallel with the nine levels of the Mayan Underworld. The stairs have thirteen levels related to Mayan cosmology of the Higher Worlds or "Upper Heavens."The stairs are also representative of the Dragon-Serpent\'s body with carved serpent heads at their base. The serpents are literally brought to life by undulating shadows from the pyramid\'s corner tiers each Spring and Autumn equinox.
