Antique Chinese Meissen Style Porcelain Figurine \"Nodding Buddha\"Description:
Late 19th century Meissen style porcelain nodding Buddha.
The Buddha is hand painted with realistic features and floral clothing. The decoration is fine and intricately detailed, whilst the porcelain itself is of high quliaty. The head, tongue and hands are articulated, moving up and down when the buddha is vibrated or moved slightly. The figure is oriental in appearance, with dark hair, slanted eyebrows and sits in a traditional cross legged position. The Buddha\'s robe is open around its shoulders, revealing the large belly beneath and ruffled neck cravate.
There is a clear makers mark on the underside, this unusual buddha is very similar to those made in the 18th century my the famous German porcelain makers, Meissen. However, we think it was produced by one of the many German replica porcelain factories who tried to copy famous producers such as Meissen throughout the 19th century. We cannot trace the identity of the blue circular mark with a line through on the base of this item so the Buddha is \'maker unknown\', although thought to be German in origin.
