Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, having first chosen the name “Columbian Watch Co.” but this name was already copyrighted by the Waterbury Co. The name Hamilton was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and during the WWI period a small line of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following Thin-o-matic model from the Hamilton firm, an automatic wind timepiece in excellent condition. This is the “T-406” – first introduced by Hamilton in 1962 and featuring a daring, Retro Modern case design.
his one-piece, hermetic 10kt Yellow Gold filled case model features a mechanism based on the original Buren “micro” rotor mechanism that lead Hamilton to buy Buren so they could own the rights to this ingenious self-winding movement design.
Triple-signed, it measures 38mm end to end and 33mm in width (35mm with Hamilton-signed crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/2” long by just over 1-1/4” wide, not counting the Hamilton crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, Hamilton-signed rotor automatic 620 grade mechanism that’s been fully serviced by my valued watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, finely brushed silver enamel finished dial is pristine condition, untouched since it left the factory half a century ago. This was a hard dial to photograph – it is even NICER in person. It features applied 18kt solid yellow gold hour markers, a 60 second outer track border, original gold metal Baton-style hands and ‘sweep’ gold center seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12 and Thin-o-matic above the 6. It is further signed “Swiss” at the base.
The original acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The one-piece case is a hermetic design crafted of 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and in pristine shape, nicer than my photos convey. You don’t get more Retro Modern “Space Age” than this design – it is a beauty! The original Hamilton-signed gold winding crown is in excellent order as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back of the case is free of any and in excellent shape, stamped “Hamilton” at one edge and “10k Gold Filled” at the opposite edge. In the center it is monogramed “C.L.M. – D.D.T. – 12-31-64”.
Given its one-piece case design I had my watchmaker David take the pictures of the movement and inside case. The self-winding automatic mechanism is stamped HAMILTON WATCH CO., SWISS – [GRADE] 620 – SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, HYL.
The inside of the case back is stamped HAMILTON W. CO, LANCASTER, PA. – 10KT GOLD FILLED with case number below. The case maker was Jonell, as per the “J” with arrow stamp.
This hermetic, gold Thinomatic T-406 has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted on a new and high quality 18mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold buckle. I have sold these micro-rotor Hamilton models for a while now and have to say they are arguably under-valued in the current market. Unique circumstances led to the Thin-O-Matic’s emergence and the combination of the Hamilton name and an ingenious self-winding design makes it a special timepiece in my book. Plus, have you seen the dial and case design?
