CANDELABRA/MIRROR CENTREPIECE

c1860

An unusual and ornate silver plated centrepiece comprising a two light candelabra sporting floral borders in relief, with detachable sconces with a stylised berry spear to the centre of the scrolled foliate draped arms. The candelabra section slides securely onto the tubular housing to the centre of the thick and bevelled mirror which in turn is raised on three small domed feet. To the rim of the mirror there is a cut scalloped design which sparkles as the light hits it. It is unattributed but is estimated to have been made around the mid Victorian period, c1860-70.

A real antique with some age related issues and ancient repairs comprised of a repair to one of the arms (highlighted in the relevant images) and to the tubular sleeve to the base of the candelabra. The latter is a rather rough rendition which unfortunately in turn is reflected in the mirror. This is easily covered by a few fresh blossoms, small berries or fruits, or an appropriate decoration according to the season. Please refer to the images for the area of its reflection is not large. There is some wear to the silver cover here and there but the majority is still good. To the reverse the piece is very scratched although again, most of the cover is intact. There may well have been a protective baize stuck to this at one time. The mirror itself is super, of quality depth and with the silvering intact. Possibly there was a taller central shaft which supported the candelabra at a more prominent height, we suggest this as to the central tubular housing to the mirror it is threaded, although as it is it is a very secure fit.

Displays with interest, a very unusual Victorian centrepiece.
