The strip is signed \"Whelan\" (in the title panel statement \"Whelan Serial\") and dated \"9-22\". Presented in two tiers (as were all of the Minute Movie comic strips). Distributed by George Matthew Adams Service. There is nocopyright indicia. Reverse is marked \"9/21\" in blue pencil and \"Adams 9011/13 Fri\" in pencil. If the strip ran onFriday, September 22nd, it would have run in 1922 or 1933.

This is episode #38 of Minute Movies\' \"Sun and Sand\", a foreign legion epic set in the desert.The sheik has kidnapped our heroine, Jeanne Holden, and is trying to force her to marry him. He\'s threatened to torture her father and his companion, Mr. Crawford. Meanwhile, the sheik\'s favorite wife is conspiring to eliminate her rival and to maintain her position.The legionairres drag themselves into Biskudah and are working on learning the location of the sheik\'s secret hideout. A nicelyrenderedand uncommonoriginal comic strip.

Character and Artist Information:

MINUTE MOVIESwas an American comic stripwhich ran from 1917 (as Midget Movies; name change as of 1921) through 1935. Written and drawn by Edgar \"Ed\" Whelan, the strip satirized early motion pictures. It was one of the first continuity strips and was the first to adapt film techniques and cinematic camera angles/shots to comic strip panels.The strip eventually starred recurring \'actors\' inthe lead roles of the various movies. These characters were so popular that fans wrote in seeking their autographs. The strip was reprinted, and eventually included new episodes, in Movie Comics and Flash Comics.

Edgar \"Ed\" Whelan(1888-1966) was an American comic artist and illustrator. He is most well known for his long run on MINUTE MOVIES, but also drew the comic strips Roy McCoy and the circus-themed Big Top. He later drew the features Fat & Slat for EC Comics and Foney Fairly Tales for DC Comics.

Condition: This art is in very goodcondition. There are no stats, paste overs orwhite out corrections.Heavy edge/corner wear to board (does not affect art). Small tear to bottom edge which goes approximately 3/4\" into bottom center panel.Spots and smudges to art. Board has darkened.
