Character and Artist Information: (derived from Wikipedia entries)

MISS PEACHwas written and drawn by Mell Lazarus (b. 1927) from 1957 until 2002 (when Lazarus retired from the strip for health reasons). The strip was humor (often sarcastic) based and focused on a bunch ofrather hip kids/students who attended theKelly School (or, during the summer,Kamp Kelly). Both the school and the camp were named after POGOcartoonist Walt Kelly. The strip usually featured one or more these characters:

Miss Peach, the main teacher, sweet and good natured, beloved by her students, although she can be firm.

Ms. Crystal, the octogenarian kindergarten teacher. She would sometimes ask Francine to watch her young charges.

Mr. J. W. Grimmis, pompous and somewhat grouchy principal.

Mr. Musselman, gym teacher.

Miss Peach\'s students, Marcia Mason, Ira Brom, Arthur Strimm, Francine, Freddy Foster, Lester Larson, Linda, Walter, Stuart and Sheila.

Comics historian Don Markstein has described the strip as follows,\"[Miss Peach\'s]students, Arthur, Ira, Marcia and several others, tended to be hip, wisecracking types rather than typical media kids from before the 1950s. Another frequently seen supporting character was Miss Crystal, who was in her 80s and still teaching at Kelly. The strip was a success from the start, and quickly began generating paperback reprints. There were also a couple of comic books. Dell put out an issue in 1963, written and drawn not by Lazarus, but by Jack Mendelsohn(Jackys Diary). Six years later, Lazarus did a comic book special, Miss Peach Tells You How to Grow. Lazarus, a staunch supporter of creators\' rights, later moved from the Herald-Tribune to Creators Syndicate.\"

Miss Peach was made into a series of TV movies in the 1980s.

Mell Lazarus (b. 1927) is an Americannovelist (The Boss Is Crazy, Too; The Neighborhood Watch) and cartoonist, most famed for his humor comic strips Miss Peach (1957-2002) and Momma (1970 to present). He also drew the comic strip Pauline McPeril. Lazarushas won numerous awards including the NCSBest Humor Comic Strip Award in 1973 and 1979 and a Reuben Award in 1981. His artis very stylized and features \'flounder face\' characters (both eyes are on the same side of the nose).
