Large Original Antique Moigniez Bronze Sculpture – Merinos Nes a Wideville

Offered here is an early original Jules Moigniez bronze sculpture of a group of sheep in front of a fence. It is a well known piece titled “Merinos Nes A Wideville” and is considered one of the finest sculptures of sheep ever produced. Christopher Payne, in Animals in Bronze, states:

“ As the detail shows, one of the sharpest casts ever seen throughout the whole period of animal bronzes. A superb cast by Jules Moigniez, one of four models exhibited at the 1861 Salon, this model being shown in wax. Not only has the sculptor created an attractive, well balanced family group but he has detailed every curl of the wool and modelled an almost Barye-like series of folds in the loose skin and wool of the necks. ln common with the accepted ideas of the period he has put one of the sheep, in this case the proud ram, with his front feet on a rock, giving the model added height and perspective, allowing the onlooker’s attention to be drawn in a slightly asymmetrical triangle. An excellent cast that has only been seen twice by the author and both times at sale, it is certainly an underappreciated model that would be very difficult to beat for sharp detail and foundry technique.” Signed ‘J. Moigniez’ and titled ‘MERINOS NES A WIDEVILLE’

Our cast is in good condition, without losses or visible damage. The patina exhibits some oxidation resulting in a variegated finish that is probably more interesting than the original, if somewhat lighter. The appearance of the animals is gray- brown, with traces of the underlying gold/bronze showing through. The base is a warmer brown gold which provides a nice contrast with the sheep.

The ram best exhibits the deep folds in the wool referenced by Payne, although this is evident in all the animals. Each of the three standing animals is attached to the base with four hand cut nuts. The ewe lying in the foreground is attached with two nuts. The fence posts are also attached with hand cut nuts. It’s a very complex piece and not often seen. Our detailed photos give an accurate picture of the condition.

This piece usually brings $5000 or more at sale, including buyer’s premium. We are starting below that with the option for offers. Please wait for the invoice. Returns are accepted only in case of misrepresentation but our guarantee of authenticity is without time limit.
