Some more information about this Montblanc Simplo 4 Safety pen.
Made in Germany 1910-20s. This pen has a fabulous original Number 4 Nib. Perfect condition Nib. Amazing writer. These wonderful early Montblanc are the Grandfather of the modern Boheme range. They haveretractableNibs. They work the same as a Boheme. You unscrew the cap off. Put on Tail end and turn. The nib comes out and locks in place ready to write. Once finished turn the cap the opposite direction to retract the nib back inside the barrel. Pull Cap off Tail and screw back on Front. Simple. Can also be donemanuallyby hand without posting Cap on Tail for those who proffer. (Same system as a Waterman Safety of same age etc.)
The pen itself is made of BHR (Black Hard Rubber). The unique Cap screw on system and retracting Nib makes this pen disguise its true size when capped. 11.8cm or 4.7 inch. However its real size can only be measured when the nib is fully extended. Then the pen even without cap on tail is longer than a 134 or a 146. The cap itself is the same length as a 134. Once posted Cap on Tail this pen is longer than all the 30-50s 134, 136, 146 etc etc pens. It is because these safety pens screw into the very end of their caps as they have no nib. The end cap acts as a stopper like a perfume bottle. The front of the pen seals up to the Montblanc Star Logo End Cap. Uniquely compact pens. Great design.
The pen has no Cracks, Splits, Repairs, Dents, Scratches or Bite marks etc. The Black Hard Rubber shows no oxidation and has beautiful Gloss and Sheen to it. Still a wonderful Jet Black. Most have turned Brown. The pens turning Knob or End Cap is stamped Model Number 4. M stands for Medium Line Nib. The Cap and Body have nopersonalizednames or imprints etc. Very understated yet elegant. Its only the huge off White or Ivory Star logo Cap top that signals its identity and quality. Very handsome pen indeed...
I will add more detail on how it writes once I have added writing sample etc.....

Some more information on the wonderful Nib and how it actually writes.....

The 14C Number 4 M Nib this pen has is a beauty. Medium to Medium Fine line down stroke with Fine to Extra Fine line Side stroke at normal pressure. Very elegant and sophisticated even when not flexing. What I would call an excellent every day line for general writing etc. Practical lines. However this nib can also Flex from Fine Medium line to Bold almost Double Broad on the down stroke when varying levels of pressure are applied. Very creative nib full of personality. The flex is not soft, loose or twitchy. Flexes only when user command Never by itself. Fantastic pen.
Although in my previous notes I compared this pen to the modern Boheme I must point out the Nib on this 1910-20s Number 4 is nothing like a Modern Boheme to write with. Polar opposites in fact. This wonderful Number 4 nib has Flat Point Iridium Tips to give Extra Fine Side Stroke for Cursive Joined hand writing with Fine hair line letter join etc... Old School. The Best. These old style Nibs need a little experience to get the best from them. Being so flat tip they are sharp and can dig in on the up stroke if you apply pressure. The flex can only be used on the down stroke.A lighter touch is needed on the up stroke and side stroke. However in the hands of an experience writer this nib will offer writing so beautiful it simply leaves all other in its shade. Modern Montblanc Nibs are just a Huge dollop Ball of Iridium. (Same line width up, down, side to side makes no odds.) Modern Montblanc like Boheme have no Flex. Also the filling system is completely different with this pen being Eye Dropper orPipettefill and the Boheme take modern Cartridges.
The filling system on these Safety Montblanc is simple. Whilst the Nib is retracted inside hold the pen upright. Take an eye dropper or pipette full of your favorite ink and squirt directly inside until almost full. Whilst still holding upright turn the tail end cap to extend the Nib out fully. Done. Takes 5 seconds and is very easy to do. I will include a Pipette.
Although this pen works perfect and has superb ink flow when writing it would need new Cork seals fitting if you intend to leave ink inside whilst in storage or use every day as you main writer. These early Safety pens are different from standard Eye Dropper pens because they have so many moving parts in order to extend and retract the nib. As such they need Cork seal inside to prevent leak from the end cap whilst turning to retract nib etc. Same as the Waterman Safety pens. Very easy to service and replace corks. I would have done myself but I have no cork the right size in stock. The pen holds ink as it is and does not leak from the front ever when writing. It is just a few micro drop when you turn the end cap only. Still has its original cork inside and does still work. Just not as perfect as it would with new cork fit. However if you want to just use it from time to time or add to collection I would leave as it is. A paper tissue takes care of theoccasionalmicro drop from the end cap which only happens when turned.... Superb Rare pens....
Finally the original pocket Clip this pen comes with is VERYspecialalso. The last one of these I saw on sold for 250GBP on its own. This pocket clip is even better. As good as you will ever see. Ultra Rare Clip.
