Sterling Silver Kiddush Cup Shabbat Wine Beaker
WINOGRAD Judaica

Description

Finest quality kiddush cup or beaker by reknown 20th century silversmith Henryk Winograd (b. Poland c. 1915 - d. United States 2008). Each Winograd piece is unique and is signed by the artist and copyrighted. Beautifully etched by hand, it features the Lions of Judah motif, Star of David and Hebrew text (Lichvod Shabbat/To honor Shabbat). This is an older cup, dating back to the early 1990s or so. With age comes character - oxidation in the deep recesses of the etching and a rich patina to the silver have resulted in it looking even more beautiful than when it was made. This piece comes from the private collection of another well known 20th century silversmith and antiques dealer (a friend of Mr. Winograd). Perfect for Shabbat or as a Wedding or Bar or Bat Mitzvah Gift.

MATERIAL: Of Sterling Silver with 24K gold lined interior.

SIZE: About 3 1/8\" tall, 2 1/2\" across the top.

MARKS: On bottom as shown in photo - Copyright symbol \"HW 925\", Hand signed by the artist in script \"H. Winograd\".

CONDITION: Pre-owned item. It has not been formally used (so technically it would be \'old new stock\'), however it presents more like used and does have some signs of age. There is some wear to the 24k gold interior finish. I can feel one shallow impression dent on the exterior and I can see it on the interior gold finish (see photos). Enjoy the many super enlarged photos below.

ABOUT THE ARTIST (provided by the collector from various primary sources): Mr. Winograd was one of the great 20th century masters of traditional silversmith techniques and was widely consider the leading practitioner in the United States of the historic art of Repousse. His mezuzahs and kiddush cups are somewhat derivative of 18th and 19th century antique Russian pieces and some are modeled on historic pieces in Jerusalem. This is not surprising, as he was born in Poland of Russian parentage, from a lineage of silversmiths to the Czars. His initial silversmith training was in Poland, before coming to the US in the 1970s. It didn\'t take long for his talents to be recognized by other silversmiths, collectors and museum curators. To craft in the Repousee style, he fabricated by hammering sheets of silver into hand crafted molds. He preferred to work in 99.9% pure silver for his artistic/decorative pieces, but generally used sterling silver (92.5%) for his mezuzahs and Kiddush Cups to add some strength and durability.

COMPARE to 2015 sales of Winograd Kiddush cups at J. Greenstein & Co, Judaica saleeers in New York. SOLD prices were $2000, 2500 and $3250. Those cups had repousse Judaica scenes. His etched cups are harder to find.
