Antique Early to Mid 19th Century Forged Iron Whaling Harpoon

A great example of an antique whaling harpoon dating from the first quarter of the 19th century, circa 1830-50, purchased at the last Brimfield Mass Antique show from a dealer who reported it to be from a Bolton Mass. estate sale.

As you can see this is a toggle head example, formed to accomodate an iron cotter stlye pin. Similar examples can be seen in numerous volumes on the subject of whaling and the industry behind it.

Note the rare variation in that the center of the shaft has a more \"square\" or \"rectangular\" craftsman ship. This is the area where the piece would likely have sustained more twisting, so it\'s likely the blacksmith who made it chose to reinforce the area with this design.

From age there is some minor pitting, some dings to the area of the shaft collar from use; about overall this is a very good/very good+, example.

Measures approx 33 1/3\" in length. The broad toggle head blade measures 10 1/4\" in length. The collar has a diameter of approx 1 3/4\".

A wonderful original example of early American, New England whaling harpoon, certain to be a great addition to any maritime, or whaling related collection.
