FANTASTIC, HANDWRITTEN TRAVEL DIARY. A NORWEGIAN CRUISE, IN THE FJORDS OF NORWAY, ON THE SHIP THE AUGUSTE VICTORIA, IN 1897. This stunning travel diary appears to be the official H.A.P.A.G. [Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft] publication that was quite possibly sold to tourists as they sailed. There is a photographic image of the Auguste Victoria and several plates/illustrations throughout the book that depict the fjords and villages this ship visited as it traveled down the Elbe, one of the major rivers of central Europe. Their journey begins on \"July 1 1897. We left Hamburg on one of the HAPAG tenders at 12:45 P.M. and after a very pleasant sail of about two hours on the Elbe, we boarded the Auguste Victoria. The party on board consists of about 262 people, sixty-six of them being Americans. We have some very pleasant people at our table; Mr. & Mrs. du Bois of Boston, Mr. & Mrs. Woodward of New York and Mrs. Burs [Burns] and her daughter of Brooklyn.\" etc. [please view additional scans after the listing]. Annie Louise Leavitt, 317 Howard Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts is the owner of this journal in 1897, and she has numerous handwritten entries that include; By July 2nd we were starting to see the outline of the Norwegian Coast, and as we got closer we could see mostly farms, and the houses that were scattered along the coast were only one story high with all red roofs - and they looked so picturesque. At Hardanger [Fjord], the scenery was gorgeous as we were enclosed by mountains on both sides. The mountains were so high we could not see the tops and there were waterfalls on both sides that were incredibly beautiful. At Odda we [papa, and I] took a drive in the most beautiful valley and saw the finest waterfall in all of Norway; then on to Molde Fjorde, which is not nearly as beautiful as the Hardanger, nor is it as picturesque, etc. She describes Trondhjem as a \"queer little place\" and the old Cathedral is the most interesting thing in the city, etc.Beautiful little journal has numerous illustrations of areas/fjords in Norway, several are printed in a blue-green color, the the rest are in black and white. They include; a photographic image of the ship; Hardanger Fjord; Ringedals Foss; Bergen; Nordal; Saebo; Moldefjord; Romsdalsborn; Trondheim; Svartisen Gletscher; Farsund; Nordcap [Nordkapp]; Mitternachtssonne; Hammerfest; Tromso; Bei Digermulen; Lofoten; Nordfjordeid; Ander Norwegischen Hilfe; and Kugelbaake Cuxhaven. A stunning handwritten travel diary that is a very worthy acquisition indeed.Of Note: Annie Louise Leavitt was born March 1, 1878 and was sixteen years old when she took this voyage with her \"Papa\", Erasmus Darwin Leavitt, age 57. Erasmus Darwin Leavitt, Jr., [October 27, 1836 – March 11, 1916], also known as E. D. Leavitt, was a noted American mechanical engineer best known for his steam engine designs; he was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, etc. [Further information in Wikipedia]. Passports were issued in Boston, Massachusetts. Presumably from Annie\'s writings her sister, Margaret Almira Leavitt, twenty-one years of age, was also along on this cruise.Condition: Hardbound in red and black with what appears to be a Viking ship design mid front cover, this album is in good condition with the following. Outside covers show light shelf wear, inside front hinge is cracked and a few pages are shaky. Journal measures approx. 4 1/2 x 6 inches and has 22 printed illustrations of places in Norway; the gorgeous title page; and the pictorial image of the ship. Fourteen pages are covered with handwritten diary entries and numerous pages are empty toward the back of the book. Diary commences on July 1,1897 and the last entry is at the end of July 6, 1897; almost a week long cruise in that Nordic country; Norway.
