A VERY FINE AND RARE VICTORIAN NAUGHTY MADE IN GERMANY BY HERTWIG & CO OF A LADY IN A TURTLE SHELL WITH A TEDDY BEAR BETWEEN HER LEGS- \"BEAR BOTTOM\" DATING TO C1910.
The Victorian naughties are so rare and delightful! This is a fantastic example of an original Victorian figure of a woman in a turtle shell with a very very rare teddy bear between her legs which is revealed when the shell is removed. Thus she has a \"Bear Bottom!\" The bathing beauty type of naughties are so wonderful but this one combines these collectibles with the cross collectible of the teddy bear! It is in wonderful condition with no chips or damage. There is a slight flattening of the front of one side of her hair which I believe is a casting flaw. This is very minor. The piece is signed Germany on the bottom and dates to c1910. I believe it is made by Hertwig & Co. but could also be by Gebruder Heubach or Schafer and Vater or Galuba Hofmann.As the Victorian era passed into the Edwardian and Roaring Twenties, a market developed for bisque and china bawdy novelties and figurines of women in revealing outfits. Although now most of these figurines seem more coy and cute than ribald and risque, in their time they symbolized the casting off of the perceived restraints of the Victorian era. These little lovelies included bathing beauties, who came clad in swimsuits of real lace or in stylish painted beach wear, as well as mermaids, harem ladies, and nudies, who were meant to wear nothing more than an engaging smile. Also produced were flippers, innocent appearing figurines who reveal a bawdy secret when flipped over, and squirters, figurines that were meant to squirt water out of an appropriate orifice.Most were manufactured in Germany from the late 1800s through the 1930s, often showing remarkable artistry and imagination.If you are looking for a truly fantastic quality antique, one with history drama style and a great investment piece you will be thrilled.
