It would be difficult if not impossible to think of a living Navajo artist who\'s had more influence on his art and other artists than Greg Pat\'s stepfather, the late Harry Morgan.

Not onlydid Harry train many of the famous revivalist artists in the Gallup area, he also had an enormous artistic influence on his own family and extended family which includes his sons Kelly and Jacob Morgan, his former wife, Betty Joe; his stepchildren Greg Pat and Selena Warner; and his brother in law, Kirk Smith. Harry inspired every one of these artists to preserve the old styles that were the foundation of Navajo jewelry making and were nearly lost prior to the beginning of the revival movement of 15-20 years ago.

Greg, who now works full time as an engineer for the state of New Mexico,has a slightly more minimalist design approach than Harry so his pieces have do have distinct differences. But there are far more similarities than differences -- the same passion for perfection of every single design element of this bracelet, the same flawless old pawn finish, and the same insistence on using nothing but the best quality turquoise.

Though onlyfive years after his graduation from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Greg now supervises major highway infrastructure improvement projects in the state. About a year and a half ago, he actually \'retired\' from jewelry making for several months. After several Gallup traders asked him to resume production even on a very limited basis, Greg relented and has resumed his art on a very part time basis.

For this gorgeous old style bracelet with an old pawn finish, Greg selected threescarce and expensivehigh grade pale blue and blue green Carico Lake turquoise. Each of these freeform stones is mounted in a fine sawtooth bezel and surrounded by a very fine twisted rope wire overlay. The center stone measures 13/16ths\" by ¾,\" and the two sides stones measure 5/8ths\" by 9/16ths\" and 5/8ths\" by 7/16ths.\" Gregoverlaidclusters of seven petite raindrop beads at the top and bottom of the center stone as wellas on the shank side of the side stone bezels. Next, he added a double twisted wire vertical overlay on either side on the stone channel followed by a large rain drop bead and hand stamped shell overlays.

The bracelet is 1 and 1/16th\" wide in the center, and its sturdy triangle and twist wire open bracelet frame tapers to 3/8ths\" at both reinforced terminals. It has an inside measurement of 5¼\" and a carefully adjustable opening gap of7/8ths.\" If your wrist is 6\" to 6¼\" in circumference, this bracelet will fit with little or nogentleadjustment of the shanks and/or terminals.

Carico Lake turquoise is currently one ofthe hottestvarieties of domestic turquoise on the market -- and one of the most expensive. An Albuquerque Native American jewelry trading company now owns this mineand chargesoutrageously astronomical high priceper carat and makes these stones exceedingly scarce since the distribution is carefully controlled in order to maintain its premium price. This unfortunately may be the forerunner of domesticturquoise mine business modelsof the future.

But enough of the economics of domestic turquoise -- after all, if Carico Lake were anugly turquoise none of this would matter. But the economics is directly proportional to the incredible beauty found in the many types of Carico Lake turquoise. Carico Lake turquoise runs the gamut from sky blue and blue greens to extremely bright lime green to the the darkest of olive greens.
