I\'m offering for your consideration a rare, indeed unique, piece by the renowned Kenneth Begay, who may have been the most important jeweler in Navajo history. Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) was called the \"father of modern Navajo jewelry\" for his clean, bold, modern designs. But he also exemplifies the long history and continuity of Navajo jewelry-making: Begay studied under Fred Peshlakai at Fort Wingate, who had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught many others including his son, Harvey, now a renowned jeweler. Though deeply rooted in traditional jewelry-making techniques, Begay\'s work was so innovative that it was rejected from a 1949 exhibition of Native art as too radical. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, \"I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style.\" Kenneth Begay created clean, elegant designs based on streamlined shapes that were repeated to form balanced and harmonious patterns, a style that has been compared to Navajo weaving. He and his cousins at White Hogan are credited with simplifying the designs of Navajo silverwork, and bringing it into the modern age. In many ways this piece is prototypical of Kenneth Begay\'s most important work, being entirely hand constructed and unique in design.

This gorgeous box measures 1-3/4\"(4.45 cm) x 1\" (2.54 cm) x 5/8\" (1.59 cm). It is uniquely designed in that the cover swivels open. The raised idle on the underside is part of the swivel mechanism which is entirely hidden and mysterious. The box is in excellent vintage, and collectible condition. There is a deep wrath on the bottom which might have always been there and there are some minor scratches on the box and very minor dings all of which are part of normal use. The box has a simple and beautiful hand made decoration on top. It is signed Hand Made KB (Kenneth Begay\'s proper hallmark) and White Hogan\'s hallmark and also stamped Sterling..

This work of art is most certainly a one of a kind piece suitable for a museum and the best of collections. It\'s your opportunity to own a masterpiece. It transports me to a happy place. I think it will you, as well.

Tracking is included in that cost, and Signature Confirmation is included on items $730 or more, total. Your invoice will allow you to choose the shipping method.

International buyers pay actual shipping cost and are responsible for any customs fees their own countries may apply. I generally use Express International, which is tracked and insured, but can always consider Priority Mail International. if that is your preference. It\'s less expensive but not insured. To the UK and Canada, even First Class International can be used because it can be tracked to those countries. We can discuss it prior to purchase.

Returns will be accepted for 14 days after your receipt for any reason and without question. Please let me know if you would like to return something. Returns must be in the same condition they were shipped. If I make a significant mistake in a listing I\'ll always give you a full refund. Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions.
