NAVAJO TRANSITIONAL RUG, CLASSIC FLOATING DIAMONDS, 48 IN X90 IN

Circa 1890- 1900

Ithink the rug appears a little narrower in the pics than in person, because ofthe camera angle.

A beautiful example of a transitional, with expertly handcarded and spun wool yarns. The field color is that wonderful deep creamnatural wool. Consists of diamonds woven in a blend of natural carded wool, anda further serrated diamond pattern surrounding each diamond in red, orange and darkbrown which appears as black in the photos. There is a two diamond motif in thecenter. This rug was woven at a time when borders had not quite taken hold.Because the diamonds are cut in half near the edges, there is the illusion of aborder, but it’s just the field color extending to the edge.

Condition: No fading, both sides the same. Lays flat. One moth nibble in a 1 in square spot.Considering the size of the rug, this is minor;its on one side only. The edgewear is mainly along one of the short sides and up a long side for about 20inches. A few small light spots. I think I’ve pictured just about everything.Look carefully at all the pictures and use the magnifying feature. Message meif you need more pics.

And, as usual with these old weavings, I suggest a cleaning. But, it’s ready to hang if you choose.
