This mask is from the Papuan Gulf area and was collected on Daru Island in the 60s. Most masks in New Guinea come from the north coast round the Sepik and Ramu Rivers so it is unusual to find an example from the Papuan Gulf area. It has the distinctive carving on the forehead. These masks represent the faces of their ancestors.
This example is in excellent condition for its age
