 NINEVEH ASTROLABE

720 BC

Brown ochre tablet, stone composite, 10 cm x 6.5 cm (approx four x two & a half inches), 15 mm thickness inscription both sides, with description sheet.

Reproduction of an unusual cuneiform tablet recording detailed astronomical data, recovered during the late 19th century from the buried Nineveh Library of Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. It is believed to be a scribal copy of a much older Sumerian tablet collected by the Nineveh library.

The tablet is the surviving fragment of an ancient two-sided star chart. One side records detailed star lists, whereas the other outlines the method employed for plotting them.

Inscribed in the Assyrian Cuneiform, the tablet displays the months of the year, key stars and measurements of degrees to find them. It is signed by the scribe Nab-Zuqup-Kenu, who lived during the reigns of the Assyrian kings Sargon II (720-704 BC) and Sennacherib (703-680 BC).

A very ancient device for plotting stellar movements, it is popularly known as an Astrolabe. Revealing the true sophistication of ancient Mesopotamian astronomy, the tablet can be seen to be the remaining section of a segmented disk or planisphere. Using marked units of angle measure inscribed on the rim, it divides the night sky into eight sectors, illustrates prominent constellations, astral bodies and their direction of movement.

Employing basic math, such calendars were used to correlate the heliacal risings of specific stars with known calendar dates and set out a numerical system for estimating the changing length of days and nights throughout the year. Some astrolabe tablets have also been found to record unusual heavenly events.
