Solid cedar wood, hand carved, hand painted, deep and very clean carvingby the well known Artist Floyd (Tyee) Joseph, a member of the Coast SalishFirst Nation. (If you prefer Canadian Currency, please contact me)

The Artist: Floyd (Tyee) Joseph is a member of the Coast Salish FirstNations, he is an Hereditary Chief of the Squamish Band on the West Coast ofBritish Columbia. His ancestral name Tyee was given to him at a Potlatch in1975. He was born in 1953 at Homulticison (Capilano), BC, ontheNorthShoreof the Burrard Inlet. Hisfather, Larry Joseph, was a carver, and Floyd was immersed in Salish art from avery early age. His mother, Marjorie Rose Thom, was originally from the NanaimoBand. After graduating in art fromCarsonGrahamHigh SchoolinNorth Vancouver, Josephattended Capilano college, majoring in art, sculpture, pottery, drawing anddesign. During this period he also visitedParis,AmsterdamandLondonto explore museums, the art andthe peoples. Since then, Joseph has gained international recognition. In 1990he was awarded a Canada Council Grant in Fine Arts and went on to produce amajor exhibition at the Marion Scott Gallery of Vancouver. Traditionalfull-scale house posts, poles, welcoming figures, carved and painted bowls,masks and sculptures reflect his heritage and knowledge of who he is and wherehe comes from. Welcoming figures like the one on UVic’s campus, when raised infront of one’s dwelling, served to protect the land and the inhabitants, welcomethose who came to visit and honor one’s spiritual beliefs and achievements.
