We are not experts on Masks but we did a lot ofresearch on great African Masks like this one -- any help would be greatlyappreciated.
In general, this is what we believe it is:
A West African Hand Carved Wood Mask that standsabout 21\" tall and 8\" wide.
A NtomoMask from the Banama Tribe from Mali - probably one of a kind and serve to protect young boys during their first initiationcycle before circumcision. The number of horns makes reference to specificcharacteristics -- in this case, the 5 horns indicate androgynous (partly male and partly female in appearance: indeterminate sex).
The antelopes are revered among these people for their speed.
It is in very goodvintage condition. These pieces have been treasured by their owners andtherefore there is no major damage. Smallsplits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina.
