Each page measures about 7 x 12” (letter is 3 x 6” folded). Torn open at seal, some staining, few holes at junction of fold-lines (see scan below), but otherwise letter is in quite good condition.Cover is addressed to:Mr. David Campbell

North Carolina. NORTH AMERICACircular orange postmark appears to read: “New York Aug 17.”Through written from the coal mining area of Drumleman, this letter was apparently carried by an immigrant from Scotland to NYC aboard a packet boat and then mailed from there. The letter reports on the death of the writer\'s mother & father in Scotland and details the hard time faced in the old country with low wages & scarcity of Money. The writer reports on much EMIGRATION TO OHIO & NORTH CAROLINA through Britain and Ireland. He fervently wished to know why his brother in NC has not written to him with encouragement to come to that “Wide & Celebrated Country.”Transcription follows:Loving Brother Drumleman 12th April 1822
I undertake the task of communicating to you that our honored Father is no more. He departed this life after a short illness of 9 days on the 28th of Nov. last. And had his senses & faculties to the last. And left his fervent and ardent wishes & prayers & blessing with us all. And to you also.I wtote to you formerly of our Beloved Mother’s Death on the 14th of Feb. 1821. I wrote immediately after my Mother’s death and the reason that I delayed this letter was, that I was looking for your letter in return after receiving the news of my Mother’s Death. Mean time loving brother, I and the rest of our family did our duty as well as circumstances could do with us. And thank God they both had a decent, honorable burial. May the Lord’s will be done on earth as the angels do in Heaven. We must all soon follow them. May God in his mercy & grace help us to be duly preparing that we may die the death of the Righteous & may our last end be like his.Agnes & I, and her Boy are still living together as family. We are in health thank God. Arthur is living in Ballygroggan. He & Family are well. Thomas Helvie and his Wife & Family are well. Thomas Helvie’s oldest son is as Bound with Captain John Colviee from Cambeltown 3 years. A Great Number of Respectable people Emigrated from this Country last Season & this Season likewise there is a good Number going but at present I cannot with accuracy Name them that going. But in my last Letter to you, I mentioned all those that went last year. The most of them goes to the State of Ohio And Some to North Carolina & All the lower Classes of people & Tradesmen Generally through Britain and Ireland are in much distress With low wages Scarcity of Money But Necessaries very plenty and prices very moderate. Your Cousin William Armour has the half of (?) and manages pretty well. He desires his kind compliments to You and your Wife. He wishes you would let him know in your answer how Land Sells there at present or what Encouragement will you give for Farmers from this Country to go there. James Armour his Father died in January last. All the rest of our acquaintances & Friends are well. Loving Brother All of us would be happy to See you. & Other people that went lately to some parts of that wide & Celebrated Country, has Sent the highest Encouragement to their friends here to go there and a great many went & are going. But all along you Never gave us any cheerful Encouragement to go where you are. And Sorry to relate our means to go there are Still turning worse without assistance. (?) Robert CampbellFrom information on the Internet:DAVID CAMPBELL was born in Scotland on 12 March 1784 and died on 10 July 1855. In 1804, when David was age 20, his family emigrated from Scotland. The family settled in Leaksville, NC. One day the family bought some beef that happened to be unwholesome from some cause. The entire family were severely stricken, and all died except David barely lived. He was sick for a long time, but finally recovered.David Campbell married Mary C. (Polly) Dillon (1799-1891), worked as a tailor, and settled in Henry County, Virginia. His children were William A. (1832-1900), who married America Hairston Pannill (1847-1905).
James P. (1834-1916), who married Catherine (Kate) Mitchell (1838-1875).
Robert (1837-1857) the youngest son, died unmarried at a young age.
Mary T. (1838-1925), the only daughter married Hiram K. Hodges (1836-1915), of Franklin County, VA.
