Up for sale is this bound volume of Original Civil War Harper\'s Weekly Newspapers from 1861. This is a Library Bound volume, and has good hard covers. The hard covers have been re-attached/reinforced with black tape, so they are securely affixed to the volume. The volume includes the newspapers between:
May 11, 1861 Through December 28, 1861
IT IS MISSING:
May 25, 1861, June 1, 1861, July 20, 1861, October 5, 1861
It is not unusual for library bound volumes like this, as at the end of the year, if several papers were missing, they would just bind the ones they had. Notice though, that the amount of material contained in the volume is typical for a half year, since the issues include May 11 and May 17, which are normally not in a half year volume for the second half of the year.
I am a lifelong collector, and have one of the largest private collections of Civil War Harper\'s Weekly Bound Volumes in the country. My wife and I are preparing to move to Africa to be missionaries, so we must sell all our treasures, including the Harper\'s Weekly collection.
There is a lot of really nice content in this volume, including lots of Abraham Lincoln material, lots of Civil War maps, and great slavery content, including the famous and highly collected illustration of the Slave sale, which is a full page illustration.
This is a really nice volume and the pages are in very nice condition. None of these original volumes are without some issues, so I will try and describe the problems I see in this one as carefully as possible.
CONDITION DETAILS:
May 25 and Jun 1 Issues are missing355/356 1\" corner tear389/390 Large Tear across page391/392 Margin tattered397/398 Old Library mend of page tear399/400 Old Library mend441/442 Corner tear, not affecting illustration. This is the key illustration of the Slave sale.July 20 issue is missing467/468 MIssing505/506 1\" tear extending slightly into illustration509/510 Missing565/566 MissingOctober 5th issue missing
Those are the issues I found in turning through the pages. I consider this to be a very nice volume, and it has only minor foxing and margin smears. Really a solid volume, with the problems listed above.
