Ursula is based on the \"sea witch/sorceress\" character inHans ChristianAndersen\'s story \"The Little Mermaid\". In the original story the sea witch is a neutral enabler, but for Disney\'s adaptation, the character was modified into a full-fledged antagonist and plays a larger role in the overall story.

This was created by Disney artists and was actually photographed during the making of the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature The Little Mermaid (1989).

Cel paintings are the final step in the intensely laborious process of animation. The artistic process begins with the storyboard, which illustrates the action of the script. Next, the animators create pencil drawings which give life and movement to the characters. After the drawing is transferred onto acetate either by hand or xerography, artists of Walt Disney Studios Ink and Paint department then hand-paint the Cel.

A Cel painting is made for each movement in the action of an animated character. The Cels are photographed over master backgrounds and projected onto the screen in rapid succession, 24 per second, creating the illusion of motion.
