This wonderful advertising posterpromoted California fruit during the art deco era. The “golden state” even to this day produceslarge quantities of the nation’s fresh fruit supply thanks to its’ wonderfulclimate. The poster touts the “CALIFORNIASUMMER FRESH FRUIT FESTIVAL” with emphasis on peaches, pears, plums andnectarines. The poster is illustratednot only with pictures of luscious fruit but also with the images of fourattractive young women in bathing suits.We think that this poster is quite scarce if not rare. We originally purchased it in southernCalifornia where we lived for over 40 years.During that entire time we never saw another example of this poster.

The poster measures 21 ½” X 14 ½”. It is mounted on period card stock. There is no publishing information on theposter; consequently, we do not know who printed it or exactly when. Our feeling is that c. 1925 is close.

Advertising posters in the pastfrequently were not preserved and being made of paper did not help their lifespan. Since they were made to announceevents, promote products, etc., they were naturally subject to indifferentcare. They were tacked to walls; gluedon posts; displayed in store windows in bright sunshine, etc. or simply thrownaway once their usefulness had expired.In short, most of them did not survive.

This poster, approximately 90 yearsold, falls into the above general category.It was not created for aesthetic purposes but instead was intended topromote the fruit festival and sell the product. Because of its’ humble origins, we considerourselves fortunate to have it. It is ingood original condition for a poster of this age. Somewhere in its’ life it received moisturedamage to the back. This resulted into alight moisture ringing to the bottom of the front which is hard to see. This resulted in a slight lifting to thepaper in the lower left-hand quadrant creating a rippling effect to the marginedge in that area. There is also framewear to the margin edges. However, that’spretty much it. None of this isdebilitating and the piece displays well.While any deficiencies could be treated, we’ve never seen the need andhave preserved it in as original condition as possible which for a poster ofthis age is good. There are no pinholes, tears, foxing, burning or repairs.This poster is not to be confused with posters described as “vintage”which are frequently reproductions.
