Offering a unique original mixed media (acrylic, ink, etc.) painting depicting a view of a PoP ART Still life, signed RoyLichtenstein, inscribed Lichtenstein, in the lower margin of the artwork and on verso ofthe artwork. Although Lichtenstein will always besynonymous with Pop Art, he continued to make inventive new work for almostthree decades beyond the 1960s, during which he had become famous for hisdistinctive use of popular cartoon images and commercial painting style.Beginning in 1972, he began to work on still lifes, making his own updatedcontribution to the venerated historical genre, using hard, vivid color andsimulated Ben-Day dots, laboriously painted by hand. Lichtenstein rendered his StillLifes in flat, outlined shapes that were inspired by newspaper and printadvertisements and painted to look like the originals. Frequently hisevocations of mechanical reproduction were more pronounced than in the originalsource; even when adapting motifs from other artists\' works, Lichtenstein usedpostcards or reproductions of the original rather than the original itself.Lichtenstein\'s Still Lifes cover a variety of motifs and themes, including the most traditional such as fruit, flowers, and vases. He alsocreated still lifes from contemporary vernacular subjects, including theintentionally banal Office Still Lifes, as well as from the contents ofhis own studio. During the 1970s he began to quote art-historical styles aswell as his own previous works, for instance rendering his subject in a waythat conflated Cubist or Expressionist style with his own signature technique..

When we thinkof still lifes, we think of paintings that have a certain atmosphere orambience. My still life paintings have none of those qualities, they just havepictures of certain things that are in a still life, like lemons andgrapefruits and so forth. It\'s not meant to have the usual still life meaning.
—Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtensteinwas one of the first American Pop artists toachieve widespread renown, and he became a lightning rod for criticism of themovement. His early work ranged widely in style and subject matter, anddisplayed considerable understanding of modernist painting: Lichtenstein wouldoften maintain that he was as interested in the abstract qualities of hisimages as he was in their subject matter. However, the mature Pop style hearrived at in 1961, which was inspired by comic strips, was greeted by accusationsof banality, lack of originality, and, later, even copying. His high-impact,iconic images have since become synonymous with Pop art, and his method ofcreating images, which blended aspects of mechanical reproduction and drawingby hand, has become central to critics\' understanding of the significance ofthe movement.By embracing \"low\" art such as comic books and popularillustration, Lichtenstein became one of the most important figures in the Popart movement. While his paintings of cartoons and comics are his mostrecognizable work, he had a prolific and somewhat eclectic career that drewfrom Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism. But it is his re-imagining ofpopular culture through the lens of traditional art history that has remained aconsiderable influence to later generations of artists, as Pop art went on tosignificantly inform Postmodernism.
