AN ANTIQUE ANDEAN WOOD RETABLO

Inventory Number: TM12597
Origin: Andean region, South America.
Basic Description: An authentic hand-painted wood religious tablet, possibly a painted furniture panel. The figure represents an archangel.

From Colonial times until about 30 years ago Catholic missionaries, called evangelizadores, traveled throughout the Andean highlands visiting towns, villages and hamlets preaching their gospel. Many were artisans who produced anywhere from crude to exquisite works of religious art in the form of painted panels, tin and wood \"retablos,\" crucifixes, saint and virgin boxes, \"santos,\" etc. Throughout indigenous communities missionary artists would often trade their works for livestock, food and other commodities. This is one of those works of art. It is not a reproduction, forgery or recent folk-art painting.

Approximate Age: Antique. Please refer to the AKATAKSA \"DATING\" TERMS.
Materials: Wood and paint.
Approximate Size: 10 1/2 inches high by 7 6/8 inches wide by 7/16 inch thick.
Condition: VERY GOOD, with dark, old patina an old repair. Please refer to the photos.
