This is a very old hand made paisley or Kasmir shawl. I believe it is one of those woven or stitched in India. Shawls were also made in Scotland and in France. it is hard for me to imagine that this was hand done in either place, but I guess it is possible. Only a shawl expert would know.

It is one of those rare shawls which were entirely handwoven and pieced together. Even the small pieces of fabric that are pieced together are hand woven. All the ones you see on , and there are a lot of them,are machine woven, or what is called power loomed, or jacquard, even middle and late 19th Century ones. Sometimes they have weft float brocade, but this was also done by machine usually. If you look at the back of one of those, and look at the back of this, or even the front of this, some of you can perhaps see the differences. It is like looking at a kind of lace or tatting hand work.

It would have taken a couple of people a couple of months to make, working full time. It is one of the square ones with a small black center design. It is made of many handwoven pieces which were then pieced together. It has damage, wear, and obvious considerable age. I think it is Victorian, probably Early Victorian. I am selling 2 of these, so take a look at both if this is your kind of thing. I collected oriental rugs (not shawls) for 30 years, and almost never saw any shawls like these. I saw plenty of the others.
