Offering for sale at an Antique 1c Coin Operatedpenny arcade machine made by Exhibit Supply Company (ESCO) circa 1930s. The machine offers whimsical answers to thatage-old question: HOW DO YOU IMPRESS PEOPLE?

Exhibit Supply was probably the largest maker ofcountertop machines; part of the reason for this was their carnival andtraveling show market. These people were on the move, and compact money makingmachines were exactly what they needed.

These counter-top games were intended to give a bit offun and whimsy during the Great Depression are a lot of fun toplay. You simply drop a penny in the slotand squeeze the handle. One of the bulbson the backboard corresponding to a title is illuminated – showing the patron “HOWTHEY IMPRESS PEOPLE”.

These early machines are predecessors to the later ESCOpersonality meters that have a backglass and an electric motor. The design of these is quite elegant – andthe wood cabinets are very nice given they were intended to be commodityamusement devices.

Condition-wise the machine displays nicely. The cabinet and the mechanism are alloriginal. They were restored - with the work being very well executed. The chrome on the handles and the 1c coin drop is superb. The top marquee sign is woodwith a color image attached and lacquered.It is not old – but it looks old– and shows very nicely and is an excellent complement to the machine.

The back door is old and original – it is fitted with anewer lock and keys.

While these are not rare, finding one that has theoriginal grip handles and 1c coin entry is a nice treat. If you have seen some of the recent ESCOmachines sold here on you may have noticed that they were converted tocoin slide machines. It’s great that this machine is original. The machine works on 110v power – there is anewer transformer that works reliably. Originally this would have been poweredby a dry-cell battery.
