Offered here is a very unusual old painted BEAR fetish from my personal collection. The origin, artist and stone are unknown. The eyes are turquoise "beads" and the medicine bundle has a turquoise piece and arrowhead. Other features had been painted on but are somewhat faded. There is an old sticky tag still on the left side that says "Brown Bear West". I found reference to similar fetishes in a 1976 book titled FETISHESand Carvings of the Southwest by Oscar Branson. There are photos of these similar carvings on page 25. The fetishes shown in the book are part of a "Six Directions" set. (Please see photos below from this book). This book is not included in this sale.

SIZE: This fellow measures almost 3&1/4 inches in length, is about 3/4 of an inch at the widest point and about 2 inches high at the medicine bundle.

CONDITION: Old, Used, no cracks or chips, but the painted designs have faded somewhat.

ATTRIBUTES: In Zuni tradition, every animal has special characteristics and powers that may aid the owner of a fetish carved in the image of that animal. The bear represents strength and introspection on the spiritual journey through life.
