For sale is an old pawn handmade Navajo sterling silver petrified wood pin.

Petrified wood is fossilized wood that has had its organic matter replaced by agate, bit by bit, as it decomposes. The wood structure is maintained, but the wood fibers are slowly changed into stone. Sometimes a jasper, quartz, pyrite or even opal can be found fossilized in wood.

Native Americans had various beliefs about the origin of the petrified logs in what is now Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Natives of the Paiute tribe held that these giant petrifications were spent arrow shafts and spears dispatched by the Thunder God Shinauav and his enemies during a great battle. Members of the Navajo tribe believed they were the bones of the great giant monster Yeitso.

The pin measures 1-15/16\"long, 1-1/8\" wide andweighs 16.6g. The pin has has been tested and examined for purity and is sterling silver.
