This is a listing for a vintage Native American hand wrought sterling silver and turquoise pendant. The turquoise is high grade from the Kingman mine in Arizona. There are several types of stone mined in this area and this is known as Turquoise Mountain. I have recently read that Kingman turquoise is no longer being mined. The vintage turquoise from this mine is especially beautiful, known and collected around the world.
Hallmark: Stamped MF on raised cartouche. Tested as sterling. Estate 1960\'s piece.
Dimensions: Eight stone pendant that is large enough to have been set as a cuff. Hanging length is 2 and 1/8th inches and 1 and 11/16th inches in width. The bail is a shepherd\'s hook that is soldered to the back, so out of sight when worn. It\'s a large hook which makes it easy to attach to a beaded necklace with larger sized beads, as well, of course to small sizedbeads and will accommodate a large chain, as well. It weighs 31 grams which is very substantial for a pendant. The 3 top stone\'s longest stone measures 17mm and the widest stone measures 13 mm across. The lower four stones measure 13 mm for the longest stone and 10mm across for the widest stone.
Condition: The stones are a rare gem grade in a stunning color of blue with subtle shading of light, a rich medium and the palest of green shading. j Theoverall look is rich rich blue, very hard with a wonderful polish. A small amount of scattered matrix, but for the most part, the shading is solid. The silver work is very well done, simple and feminine but still strong enough to support 8 very decent sized stones. The patina is original and has darkened with age into a very warm color.Style: All the stones are masterfully matched for color, shape and size. The artist did a fantastic job of creating a beautiful free form clustered flower with the grouping of 8 stones. Each stone is tightly held in a smooth bezel with hand poured drops of silver arranged around the central stone and between the surrounding stones which act as petals. Two large leaves are formed from an overlay of silver, creating a shadow box at the base. It adds dimension to the flower, as well as protects the stones. A silver overlay creates a vein and the artist used an ingenious method of stamping the leaves with partial suns,giving them a realistic appearance and beautiful ethnic look at the same time. Two poured drops of silver divide the leaves and complete the embellishments.
