Offered here is a very nice original Art Nouveau Friendship Motto card printed and hand colored on pulp paper. The card is hand signed and dated on the reverse by Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes Jr. and is dated 1910. The actual Signature and date read; From O W Holmes Dec. 22, 1910 The cover (envelope) is addressed to Miss Edith Bartlett, Pittsfield Massachusetts and has a Washington D.C. DEC 22 5 pm postage mark and 1910 cancel mark. The postage stamp is missing. This item is Guaranteed Original and Authentic. It came from the home of Miss Edith Bartlett (1876 - 1959) She was the Daughter and youngest child of U.S. Civil War General, Bvt. Major General William Francis Bartlett. Some time after Miss Bartlett\'s death in 1959 Her home, refered to as \"The Homestead\" on Bartlett Ave. in Pittsfield Mass., became the property of a local church. The home was originally built for Gen. Bartlett and it was the family home. After a few years the church had rented the property in the early 1960\'s and when cleaning out the home, got rid of some unwanted items. Recently I was cleaning out a basement in a Nashua N H home and came upon an old shoe box with old papers in it. The owner gave me the box for helping to clean out the basement. She had forgotten it had been down there for about 50 years. She told me the above story and along with my own research have found That Oliver Wendall Holmes Jr. was a friend and comrade of General Bartlett. Early on in the Civil War they were in the same unit. The 20th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. General Bartlett died in 1876, the same year Edith was born. Justice Holmes became a family friend of the Bartletts and had visited the family and corresponded with Edith Bartlett until his death in 1935. The card measures about 6\"inches x 8 3/4\"inches and has not been trimmed or altered in any way. The card is in excellent condition with some bleed through staining on the reverse from the glue that held the envelope together. The front of the card is excellent with one tiny stain. Envelope is missing the flap and has chips and creases and some overall light soiling and a couple of small stains.
