Original Autographed letter from New York Democratic Governor Horatio Seymour to New York Assemblyman Emerson E. Davis, dated 1875. Original autographed letter, dealing with corruption of the Canal Ring during the term of New York Governor Samuel Tilden in 1875.

Offered is an original autographed letter penned by NY Governor Horatio Seymour. The letter, addressed to NY Assemblyman Emerson E. Davis of Whitehall, is dated January 29, 1875. The letter was written, I believe, in response to E.E. Davis’ request for information pertaining to suspected political corruption of the Canal Ring in 1874-1875. The letter is signed/autographed by retired Governor “HORATIO SEYMOUR”, lower right corner. The letter, written on unlined paper reads, in part, ”Friday, Jan. 29, 1875…I Write…My Dear Sir, I have no interest in the question of the taxation of the NO. rail Road. Ben spoke on the subject when I was in the Assembly Chamber. I…away the documents…put out in the…I…one which I enclose. It may throw some light upon the…Truly Yours, Horatio Seymour.” In the lower left corner is written Hon. E.E. Davis. The single sheet of paper measures approx. 8 by 5 inches. There is a penciled notation at the top reading “GOVERNOR SEYMOUR”. The reverse side of the paper has a notation, in fountain pen, at the top, H. SEYMOUR Jan. 29.This signature does not appear to be Seymour’s signature, perhaps serving more as the recipient’s record of the sender. Condition is good, the autographed signature is strong. Paper has light creasing/folds, as shown. There is curl along the left margin. There are bits of old paper stuck to the corners on the back of the letter, from having been removed from an old scrapbook. The scrapbook contains many letters, articles and bits of ephemera pertaining to Emerson E. Davis of Whitehall, New York. I have no doubt that the letter from Governor Seymour is original and authentic, as is his autograph.
