***Please ask all questions prior to buying*** This sale is for an original lady\'s dress from the Pre-Civil War period. It is made of shimmering green/black shot silk. Features include dropped shoulders with piped armholes, deep pointed waist and boned bodice seams. The sleeves are modified pagoda sleeves. The skirt has brown cotton facing and beautiful pleats. The bodice is lined with brown cotton and fastens with its original brass hooks/eyes. The best thing about this dress is it was altered from an earlier example and the details are still very clear. The neckline was opened up and partially re-sewn with an early chain-stitch machine. The extra fabric was never removed (thrifty!), but turned under and saved. The skirt was opened up in front and hand-stitched at the edges. The sleeves were opened up and made fuller to be more fashionable in the late 1850s. You can see the stitching and the way the fabric catches the light differently. This dress would have been worn as illustrated, with an embroidered petticoat, chemisette and under-sleeves. Many dresses of this type are illustrated in fashion magazines of the period, but relatively few have ever crossed my path. This is a magnificent example of Pre-war ingenuity and a great addition to any collection! the dress shows up much greener in person. Chemisette, embroidered sleeves, petticoat and pin not included. Condition: Some surface wear and a pull on the back neck. Original alterationsMeasurements are: The bust measures about 33 inches, The waist measures about 24 inches.
