Pal Fried, a Hungarian American artist, was born in Budapest and studied at the Hungarian Academie under Professor Hugo Pohl and in Paris under Claude Monet and Lucien Simone. Fried was also greatly influenced by the French Impressionist School of Renoir and Degas. Fried specialized in portraits - among his subjects were Will Rogers, Senator Herbert H. Lehman, Marilyn Monroe, the Gabor Sisters, and many more.
This original, signed, high quality oil on canvas is in very good condition. Canvas is mounted in a period frame. Carmen is featured posing in front of a lovely Parisian street scene. This piece features one of the many high society female subjects Fried specialized with and is signed in the European manner: last name first.
Condition:
The canvas itself is in remarkable shape, with no cracking or scuffs on the paint. It is slightly loose on the stretcher bars, but does not sag or pucker, and thus it has no effect of the aesthetics of the piece. This could be remedied by a simple restretching which can be performed by your local frame shop. The back of the canvas has the title written by hand, a copyright stamp, and other handwritten markings as shown.
The frame has intentional distressing on the gesso flowers, but is also marked with wear along the edges and gaps in the corners. However, the frame is in no way loose and is quite structurally sound.
This painting was taken by us personally to the Antiques Roadshow in Chicago, where it was verbally appraised at $10,000.
